Matt Barrows has heard from league sources that the 49ers have agreed to trade Shaun Hill to the Detroit Lions for a 7th round pick in the 2011 draft. Scott Linehan coached Hill when he was in Minnesota back in 2005.
I'd imagine Hill will immediately become the backup QB to Matt Stafford. The Lions' backups last year were Daunte Culpepper and Drew Stanton (Patrick Ramsay joined the roster at some point). Culpepper is a free agent and will probably walk. Stanton and Hill would seem to compete for the #2 spot. The Lions drafted Drew Stanton in the second round of the 2007 draft, but he hasn't developed like they hoped. He lost some time to injury and has generally struggled as a pro.
And so, thus ends the Shaun Hill era in San Francisco. We'll have a more appropriate send-off at some point this week. Whatever your thoughts on Hill, he definitely had an impact in his time with the 49ers. When you can generate the kind of debate Hill generated, you've created some kind of impact.
